Service Dog Program

The Right Dog Can Change Your Life

A service dog can be a life-changer for some people, but finding one can be a challenge. Good programs often have long waitlists – sometimes several years! Rescue dogs suitable for service dog life are few and far between. Buying a young puppy is a big time investment and a huge gamble from a financial and emotional perspective, as there is a high washout rate due to temperament, health, or training issues.

Mountain Harmony Canine just launched our service dog program in April 2021 and aims to provide started service dog prospects to qualified individuals. By the time an MHK9 service dog prospect is offered for sale, they will have a very solid foundation, with all their training documented in a daily journal, and be ready to bond with their partner and begin their individualized task training.

By purchasing a started prospect, your risks are minimized and your chances of success skyrocket. You’ll have the confidence of knowing your puppy was raised by an experienced professional and is well on the way to becoming a trustworthy partner who can assist you with your daily needs to give you independence!

Meet Roscoe!

Mountain Harmony Ready Set Roscoe is an AKC registered male apricot Standard Poodle born February 24, 2021. He currently weighs 39.6 pounds. He has a natural tail and dewclaws. He has not yet been neutered, as he still has a bit of growing to do. OFA prelims are normal elbows and good hips. PennHIP LDI=.33; RDI=.36 (Breed average DI=.46).

Roscoe has a fantastic temperament! He loves everyone he’s ever met. He absolutely loves to learn and catches on to new things very quickly. He’s a very fun dog – goofy, athletic, happy, and sometimes a little mischievous. He enjoys running and playing with the other dogs in the yard, but is also the one to stand back and stare at the door waiting for his people. He’s not one to absorb the emotions of those around him – he’s going to be in a good mood regardless of whether anyone else is!

He knows multiple “dog training languages”: clicker training, SATS/TBTE intermediate and terminal bridges, and more traditional verbal marker training.

He has impeccable obedience out in public. He has been to grocery stores, the mall, department stores, restaurants, carnivals, fireworks, road construction sites, and more, and in sunny, rainy, stormy, and snowy weather. Nothing seems to faze him. He rides so well in his crate in the car that you’d forget he’s even there!

While we don’t know what tasks his person will need, Roscoe has learned a few basics for the sake of learning how to learn. He can flip traditional light switches and the rocker style switches. He presses buttons with his nose or paw, depending on the difficulty of the button. He has a soft mouth and enjoys retrieving items and handing them to you. He has a favorite keychain that can be clipped onto most anything, which come in handy if he’s struggling to pick up a difficult item. It usually takes just two or three times of retrieving the item with the keychain clipped to it before he doesn’t need the keychain anymore. We’re working on generalizing his tasks from the training setups he’s familiar with to various real life situations, and he’s doing well with that.

Roscoe has not been trained on any specific odors, but he has a VERY good nose and loves to use it. He would be a great candidate for scent training.

He is good for bathing, high velocity drying, brushing, clipping, nails, and all aspects of grooming, which is important for a poodle! He’s athletic and will jump up on the grooming table on his own if you let him!

Roscoe is ready to find his partner! He is $22,500. To be considered as a partner for Roscoe, please drop us a line and tell us a little about yourself and how Roscoe will change your life.

F.A.Q.

At this time, Mountain Harmony Canine is not selling fully trained service dogs. We do, however, offer started service dog prospects for sale to qualified individuals.

There will be an application process to make sure the person and the prospect are the best match for each other.

MHK9 service dog prospects may be only be purchased by or for an individual who has a disability that a dog can be trained to help mitigate.

Our service dog prospects are carefully chosen for good health and rock-solid temperament. They are raised with our relaxation and relationship based training methods from a very young age, and are socialized and prepared appropriately for a life in public. You can expect them to have excellent obedience in public settings and good manners at home.

MHK9 can assist in connecting you with a local trainer or legitimate online program, depending on your level of experience, to finish out the individual task training.

Eventually, we hope to have our own breeding program. For now, we are partnering with breeders to select puppies with a family history of good health and great temperament.

Our service dog prospects start at $14,995, depending on the individual dog and current level of training.

Yes, we can personally deliver our dogs anywhere in the lower 48.

While our goal is to raise service dog prospects, our standards are unapologetically high, so not every puppy will make the cut. If we decide a dog is not a good fit for service dog life, we will open up applications to the general public. “Career change” dogs may make excellent classroom dogs, courtroom dogs, or therapy dogs. With the tremendous amount of training they will have received, they will be excellent pets, even if they decide they’d rather not work for a living!
